I'd give this more context, but I'm curious as to how others interpret it.
She wore dark glasses and carried a cane. Not a thin white cane, but a heavy one made out of wood. The cane was apparently a personal affectation as she did not put any weight on it as she walked. Her face had more than a few stress lines and her clothes were worn. The years had obviously not treated her well. Still, it would only have been a slight stretching of the truth to call her beautiful.
Another woman addressed her as she approached.
"Men have not treated you kindly, sister."
"I have never sought kindness."
"Nor I. Still, do you not find it a painful irony how oft men call your name when in truth I am the one they seek?"
"This is as it always has been. Men are just as likely to call my name when they seek to deny you."
"Ah, but how many do you bother to listen to?"
"Few sister. You say nothing that you have not said before."
"My argument remains true sister. Why do you still persist in trying to grant what so many claim to want, but so few earn?"
"Even if I do not accomplish all that I would wish to accomplish I still accomplish something. Can you claim that your work grants anything besides fleeting satisfaction?"
"Better fleeting satisfaction than none at all."
"So you continue to claim."
"Enough, I can see that you have not changed."
"Nor you. Will you challenge me?"
"Perhaps, you seem to have put aside your sword."
"Have I?"
"Ah, a sword cane. Such concealment smacks of deception."
"I have a permit to carry a concealed weapon."
"You continue to amuse me sister. Until we meet again."
"Farewell sister."
